Winnipeg shoegaze-dream pop band Living Hour released their new EP of covers, "Lovely, Lonely: A Collection Of Covers For Hollow Hearts," this past Friday. And across its 5 tracks, they worked their way through songs originally performed by artists like Françoise Hardy, The Ink Spots and Nico. But they weren't interested in a simple nostalgia trip -- the band took these songs and remade them in their own image. The source material is still intact, but each track evinces a unique and refreshing perspective. There is reverence as well as reinvention here, as the band created a hybrid of homage and adaptation.
On recent single, "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles," they captured the ethereal sadness of Hardy but also created something irrepressibly dreamy and and memorable. The shoegaze tenacity is dialed back while the dream pop haze is brought in to provide a suitable atmosphere in which the song can bloom and explore its own musical ideology. The guitars slink around and flirt with the spotlight before receding into the shadows. The plaintive and romantic vocals of singer Sam Sarty add just the perfect node of maudlin introspection.
The band recently joined with director Chelsea Neufeld to create a suitable video for the track. Filled with smoky rooms, roses used as drumsticks, heart-shaped cakes and a soft focus visual aesthetic, the clip is the perfect stage from which the band can evoke their spectral pop inspirations.
