Multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter Julien Chang (whose last name is pronounced “chong”) announced his signing today to Transgressive Records — home to SOPHIE, Let’s Eat Grandma and Neon Indian — and shared his debut single, “Of The Past,” a track that fuses jazzy psychedelics and disco-pop rhythms into a surreal wash of mercurial tones and elongated melodies. Self-recorded and self-produced, the song features piano work from Jeheiel Smith, which adds a wonderfully warped baroque tint to the music.
Chang has been self-releasing music since his senior year in high school, and though most people who knew him considered him just a trombone player, his work has come to incorporate a wealth of progressive musical histories, aiming for a sound that assembles a resonant echo of influence and experience without distancing itself from its audience.
