The work of Chattanooga rock band Bohannons has never had much use for borders or listless musical influences. Instead, they pull from an incredibly diverse cross-section of rhythmic histories and instincts, feeding these sounds into a collective consciousness that effortlessly adapts and rearranges what best suits their needs and disregards the rest. Developing a complicated blend of classic rock, southern rock, country, blues and pop, they’ve reached a point where their music isn’t merely the result of compacted inspirations — it’s the sound of Bohannons, a truly original and refreshingly non-derivative noise which is free of artifice and banal impulses.
Apart from this complexly intuitive approach to song construction, the band has never shied away from tackling difficult subject matter, providing illumination and insight on any number of themes and ideas throughout their records. And with the release of their upcoming record, “Bloodroot” (due out April 5 via Cornelius Chapel Records), they once again head into the darkness to light the way for their audience. Exploring aspects of personal struggle, emotional volatility and social injustice, they use “Bloodroot” as a way to express, without distraction or impediment, a communal perspective on events and experiences that deeply affect us every day of our lives.
On recent single, “Refills,” they look at prescription drug dependency, specifically the way that opioid addiction can ruin lives and devastate those around the person taking the drug. Framed by churning guitars and classic rock tendencies (think Neil Young rocking out with Dinosaur Jr.), the song delves into the catastrophic consequences of falling into this trap and allowing it to take over your life. There’s no happy ending here, no last minute redemption. There’s only constant struggle and a hope that one day things might get better for people in the shackles of this bestial thing.
