Saváge, a Chattanooga native who now resides in Nashville, walks a line between beatific R&B and braggadocio-laden hip-hop, perfecting a balance between the liquid grooves of the former and the hard-edged lyricism of the latter. She also works in a welcome dose of old-school soul, the kind of melodic underpinning that so few artists seem willing or able to explore. And from within this maelstrom of influence, she creates a unique and complex sound that pays reverent homage to her inspirations while effortlessly staking out her own place inside these familiar genres.
With her latest single, “Wolfe,” she continues to mold her distinctive aesthetic, fusing metallic beats with mercurial vocal grooves and emotionally dense lyrics. Her commanding voice keeps all these parts moving forward, working in concert rather than against one another. She extols the virtues of making your own decisions and taking responsibility for your own success while also taking a moment to proudly display the material perks that her efforts have afforded her. Equal parts boast clip and self-help diatribe, the track possesses a swagger that feels earned, revealing her capacity to accomplish anything to which she sets her mind.
Shot and edited by Immaquelate Visions, the video finds Saváge hard at work, building her own name and showing that a strong black women doesn’t need someone to hold her up. Between collecting contracts, cash and shouldering her own creativity, the clip moves us through various video shoots, business meetings and hints at the intentions of someone who seems to be watching her from the shadows. She evinces a staggering confidence that translates through this narrative, though we’re left with more than a few questions regarding her fate when the music ends. We’re then shown a “To Be Continued” placer, so we’ll just have to see what happens when her next video is released.
